Natural vs. Synthetic & Imitation Gemstones

Natural, lab-grown, imitation, treated, and assembled materials.

These terms describe different things. Precise language protects buyers and allows every material to be valued for what it actually is.

Natural and laboratory-grown

A natural gemstone formed through geological processes. A laboratory-grown gemstone has essentially the same crystal structure and chemical composition but was produced by people.

Laboratory-grown does not mean imitation. It must still be disclosed clearly because rarity, market value, and origin are fundamentally different.

Imitations and assembled stones

An imitation resembles another gem but has different composition, such as glass presented to look like emerald. An assembled stone combines multiple pieces, sometimes natural and manufactured, into one object.

Doublets and triplets may be legitimate products when disclosed. Concealment is the problem.

Treatment is a separate question

A natural stone can be treated or untreated. A laboratory-grown stone can also be treated. Natural origin and treatment status must therefore be disclosed separately.

Identification may require magnification, spectroscopy, chemistry, or other laboratory methods. Visual appearance alone is not sufficient for many modern synthetics.
